All admission decisions are based on an assessment of the academic foundation needed for success in the required courses at the bachelor's degree level. Strong writing skills are important for all applicants. Minimum recommended preparation includes successful completion of a college preparatory curriculum, including:
Applicants are evaluated based on the demands of their secondary school curriculum, grades earned, rank in class, standardized test scores, writing ability, teacher and counselor recommendations, and academic growth. The Admission Committee also considers personal qualities, including academic and professional motivation, leadership, integrity, desire to perform community service and the likelihood of making a positive contribution to campus life.
We consider a student's transcript as the most important indicator of his or her future achievement at Champlain. We look for students who have challenged themselves to gain from rigorous courses and who have taken full advantage of the education available in their school. We look as favorably on average grades in highest-level courses (such as AP, IB or Honors) as we do on above-average grades in regular college prep courses. In high schools that offer several course levels, we consider college prep courses to be those offered at the level immediately below Honors, regardless of their actual titles.
Standardized test scores, such as the SAT and ACT, are considered to be one of several important elements in evaluating an application. The Admission Committee is looking for standardized test scores at or above the national average for college-bound students.
Key elements in the admission decision are a student's preparation for and commitment to a college education, desire for the chosen major and progressive growth in academic maturity.
All applicants must graduate from a recognized secondary school or earn a recognized high school equivalency certificate (GED) prior to matriculating at Champlain. Home-schooled applicants must submit GED scores or SAT II scores in two different disciplines.
Students who have been out of high school five years or more, or who do not have all the recommended preparation or standardized test scores, should speak with an admission counselor about how to apply.
In addition to your high school transcript, we must have official transcripts from your previous college(s). Initial evaluation of your transferable credit will be done by the Admission Office. We encourage all transfer students to contact an admission counselor to discuss how you can best fit in to the Champlain curriculum.
Minimum requirements for consideration include four years of college prep math and a math SAT score of at least 500 or ACT score of at least 21. Successful completion of one semester of college algebra may substitute.
Champlain endeavors to be a diverse and welcoming community and invites applications from members of any group that has historically been underrepresented.
